It was a clear summer's evening when Mrs. Adelaide walked into her drawing-room and noticed that her precious diamond necklace was missing. She immediately alerted her husband, Mr. Albert, to the situation and they both started searching the room. They turned it upside down, but the necklace was nowhere to be found.
"Who could have stolen it?" asked Mr. Albert.
Just then, their trusted butler, William, walked in. Mrs. Adelaide had known William for many years and trusted him more than anyone else. However, she couldn't help but feel suspicious after the necklace went missing.
"Where were you when the necklace went missing?" asked Mr. Albert, his voice tinged with suspicion.
"I was in the kitchen, making tea for you both," replied William.
The couple searched the house but found no signs of forced entry. They decided to go to bed and continue their investigation the next day.
The next morning, Mr. Albert decided to hire a private detective to help solve the case. The detective, Mr. Smith, arrived at the house and started interviewing everyone who was present the previous night.
He asked Mrs. Adelaide and Mr. Albert for their whereabouts, and they gave him a detailed account of their activities. He then went to the kitchen to question William, but he wasn't there.
"Where could he be?" wondered Mr. Smith.
Just then, the detective noticed that the window in the kitchen was open. He walked outside and found footprints on the ground, leading away from the house.
"Interesting," muttered Mr. Smith. "I think I know who the thief is."
He followed the footprints, and after a while, he saw William walking on the side of the road. He approached him and asked him where he had been.
"I went for a walk, sir," replied William.
Mr. Smith looked at him suspiciously and took him back to the house. He questioned William again, and after much prodding, William finally admitted to stealing the necklace.
"I needed the money, sir," he said, tears streaming down his face.
Mr. Albert was furious and threatened to call the police. However, Mrs. Adelaide intervened and asked Mr. Albert to forgive William.
"He has worked for us for many years, and I believe that he deserves a second chance," she said.
Mr. Albert was hesitant, but he finally relented and agreed to forgive William, on the condition that he returned the necklace and resigned immediately.
William apologized profusely, retrieved the necklace from his hiding place, and resigned from his job. Mr. Albert was still angry, but Mrs. Adelaide was happy that the necklace was back and that William had been given a second chance.
The mystery of the missing necklace had been solved, but it had left a bitter taste in everyone's mouth. Mrs. Adelaide had trusted William for many years, but he had betrayed her. It was a stark reminder that not everyone can be trusted, no matter how familiar they are.
